MKOMAZI NATIONAL PARK

 

LOCATION

North East Tanzania on the border with Kenya. 200 km from Arusha, or 450 km from Dar es Salaam.

Combine with Selous or Mikumi.

 

ABOUT THE PARK

Recently established, this is a park for walking enthusiasts. You will see almost nothing on a game drive, however if you plan your safari around a walking expedition then you will be rewarded with spectacular wildlife sightings. With only a few hundred people a year visiting this park, it is a place for wild nature. Quantity is absolutely compensated for by quality. Sharing an ecosystem with Tsavo in Kenya, Mkomazi has three man-made dams in the park around which the game will concentrate. It is also home to a private rhino sanctuary and wild dog conservation project.

Ideal game viewing: JUNE – MARCH. Can be difficult to access April and May.

NOTABLE WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS

If on foot, you will be rewarded with sightings including gerenuk, oryx, giraffe, zebra, hartebeest, impala, Grants gazelle, eland, lesser kudu, waterbuck, steinbuck, dikdik, buffalo, elephant, warthog, aardwolf, hyena and jackal. It is a fantastic location for birding and common sightings include secretary birds and vulturine guinea fowl.
