Mobile Expedition or Fly Camps

Our fly camps are more lightweight with smaller tents, less furniture and a very adventurous bush camp feel. The camps move regularly and have to be carried by porters or in small vehicles, so we strip out many of the luxuries you would expect in our other safari camps. There are no wooden beds, but comfortable stretcher beds instead. The toilets aren’t en suite, but you can still expect hot showers from a bucket arrangement in a nearby tree, with privacy and a great view. Pit latrines are dug at each location. Chefs accompany the camp assistants and porters and they carry a lightweight kitchen to prepare your meals over an open fire each night. The camps are set up on-demand for private groups who have a walking focus. You should expect a very adventurous safari in the style of the old explorers. Locations can include any of the parks, but we focus on the wilder and less visited parks of Mkomazi and Katavi in particular.

Katavi Thousand Star Camp

Near the banks of Lake Katavi, this private mobile safari camp is a great place for game drives to see massive herds of buffalo, giant pods of hippo and enormous basking crocs. Everything seems bigger here given the remote location and wild landscape! You can explore the Katuma River circuit and return to camp in the evening for dinner and drinks under the African skies. With no ambient light around the camp, this is the perfect location for star gazing each evening. The sky at night in Tanzania is magnificent, with the Milky Way clearly visible much of the time. It is a truly wonderful experience to sit up at night whilst on safari and listen to the sounds of the bush while star gazing.

Mkomazi Maore Camp

Located right on the border with Kenya, and sharing the Tsavo ecosystem, this is a camp for walking enthusiasts. You won’t see much on a game drive, and the roads in the park are not well developed, but when you focus on walking safaris in Mkomazi you will be rewarded by wonderful sightings of rare game in possibly the least visited National Park in Tanzania. It is a very dry park so wildlife concentrates around the three dams. Set within the Pare Mountains you can expect cool breezes at night and misty mornings, giving way to warm sunny days perfect for walking safaris. Spend a few nights in Mkomazi and you will feel like you are the only people on the planet. Mkomazi is an easily accessible, yet truly wild last frontier for experienced safari enthusiasts.

Mikumi Savannah Camp

Set up in different areas each year, this pop up camp is on-demand only. Frequently located in the lesser visited southern section of the park, it links well to the Selous in the dry season. Although set up for only very short durations, this camp has the same amenities as Selous, Ruaha and Katavi.
