SAFARI ITINERARY – 4 DAY

 

Visiting two of the smaller parks in the south of Tanzania, this itinerary gives those with limited time the opportunity to see a lot of wildlife. Combining game drives and hiking, this Safari works well when combined with beach relaxation in Mafia or Zanzibar.

 

Day 1                        Mikumi National Park

On arrival in Dar es Salaam you will be met by your guide and driven to Mikumi. Enjoy an afternoon game drive as you get close to Giraffe, Zebra, Elephant, Buffalo, Impala, Wildebeest, Eland and Warthog. Overnight in a lodge – choose a lodge outside the park for those on a restricted budget.

 

Day 2                        Mikumi National Park

Have a full day of game drive as you explore the park. The all weather roads are passable throughout the rains so it is a great year round safari destination. An excellent place for close up encounters with lion, and you’ll have a great chance to see the very shy leopard. The open savannahs are surrounded by mountains making for great vistas and dramatic skies. Watch the sun set over the hippo pools then return to your lodge accommodation.

 

Day 3                        Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Leave Mikumi with picnic lunch and drive the short distance to the Udzungwas. For those who are keen walkers, Udzungwas is a must on your safari itinerary. The Eastern Arc Mountain range is a biodiversity hot-spot with countless endemic plants, birds and primates. With waterfalls you can swim below, amazing view points through the forest canopy and onto the savannah plains below, and trails which take you to hidden valleys, this is a walkers paradise. There are a variety of trails accessible from the main gate of the park, and all hikes are guided by a park ranger. Half day gentle hikes are possible, as are full day strenuous climbs with picnic lunches. Your guide will point out the primates that populate this park, along with the amazing birdlife and butterflies. You can also learn more about Tanzanian culture and the plants used in traditional medicines. Overnight at a lodge.

 

Day 4                        Dar es Salaam

After breakfast and a final morning forest walk from your lodge, you will leave the Udzungwas as you make your way back to Dar es Salaam. Connect with flights to Mafia or Zanzibar for a few days relaxing on a beautiful Indian Ocean beach after your safari.
